Fresh air and sunshine is good for your children, but be sure to protect them from the harmful rays of the sun.

Things to remember when exposing your children to the sun:

  • Pediatricians recommend applying a generous amount of sunscreen (a shot glass full) on your child every 2 hours and more often when in water.
  • Sunscreens with physical blockers like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are less irritating for babies because they aren't absorbed into the skin like chemical sunscreens.
  • Chemical free sunscreens also have the advantage of working immediately when applied.
  • Sunscreens with chemicals must be applied 30 minutes in advance in order to work.
  • Choose a broad spectrum sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or higher.
  • Sunhats and SPF clothing are also a great way to protect your baby.
  • Do not apply sunscreen to babies under the age of 6 months.
